Evaluation of the Flemish population screening for colorectal cancer

Status
Ongoing
Under the guidance of the University of Antwerp, the Centrum voor Kankeropsporing (CvKO) (Flemish Centre for Cancer Screening) and the Belgian Cancer Registry (BCR), work is being carried out on a doctorate on the evaluation of different aspects of colorectal cancer screening programmes in Belgium. This doctoral research is being conducted in collaboration with the screening organisations BRUPREV, Le Centre Communautaire de Référence (CCR) (Community Reference Centre) and CvKO.

Contributing to the evaluation of cancer screening programmes is one of the fundamental missions of BCR. Colorectal cancer screening programmes in Belgium have different start dates, testing and organisational approaches and levels of participation by the target population. The doctoral programme’s external funding enables a thorough evaluation to be made across regions.

To answer the different research questions of the doctoral programme, data from multiple data sources will be used: data from BCR, BRUPREV, CCR, CvKO, the Agence InterMutualiste (AIM) (the agency responsible for collating data from Belgium’s seven health insurance funds), Statbel (the Belgian statistical office) and the Crossroads Bank for Social Security (CBSS). The data will then be analysed using applicable statistical models.

The researcher will defend the doctoral thesis at the University of Antwerp. The results will be published in scientific journals and presented to the relevant screening organisations and to the Flemish working group on Bevolkingsonderzoek Dikkedarmkanker (Population Screening for Colorectal Cancer).
