Quality indicators for the management of ovarian cancer in Belgium

Status
Completed
In collaboration with the Federaal Kenniscentrum voor de Gezondheidszorg (KCG) (Knowledge Centre for Health), the Belgian Cancer Registry (BCR) evaluated the quality of care and outcomes for patients diagnosed with ovarian cancer between 2014 and 2018 using 17 quality indicators. It is the first time this has been done in Belgium for this form of cancer.

The quality indicators were selected and developed in collaboration with KCE and a group of clinical experts. They are based on the KCE guidelines for the diagnosis, treatment and follow-up of ovarian cancer (KCE rapport 268 “Ovarian cancer: diagnosis, treatment and follow-up”), in addition to other international reports.

To calculate the quality indicators, BCR used cancer registration data, information from pathology reports and data on reimbursed medical benefits and medication obtained from the Agence InterMutualiste (AIM) (the agency responsible for collating data from Belgium’s seven health insurance funds). The available data and methodology were validated in eight hospitals across Belgium before final calculations were made. To reflect the distribution of care, quality indicators were calculated both at a national level and by hospital. The impact of hospital size on patient outcomes was also included.

The results of this study were published in KCE Report 357 “Quality indicators for the management of epithelial ovarian cancer", and additional analyses will be issued in the form of scientific publications. In addition, each hospital will receive an individual feedback report from BCR to encourage reflection and improvement of care.
