Cancer in children and adolescents in Belgium, 2004-2020

Belgian Cancer Registry
Publicatiedatum
This publication, which was developed in collaboration with the Belgian Society of Paediatric Haematology Oncology (BSPHO), covers the epidemiology of cancer in children (0-14 years) and adolescents (15-19 years) in Belgium over a period of 17 years.

The publication describes the incidence, survival, and trends over time according to tumor type. The Belgian Cancer Registry (BCR) now also publishes epidemiological parameters per tumor stage for the first time, following the Toronto Staging guidelines.

From the publication, it is evident that cancer remains rare in children and adolescents, accounting for less than 1% of all cancer diagnoses in Belgium. Additionally, these children and adolescents have a relatively good prognosis: the 15-year survival rate after diagnosis is 83% for children and 86% for adolescents. These results are encouraging for our young patients and their families.
