This publication describes the epidemiology of cancer in an ageing population in Belgium between 2004 and 2016. The following five topics are covered:
- The introduction, chapter 1, aims to describe the Belgian population, more specifically the ageing population. In addition, the data flow, methods and calculations are explained, so that the data presented can be correctly interpreted.
- Chapter 2 examines the availability and quality of registered cancer incidence data for the ageing population.
- Chapter 3 presents the cancer burden in an ageing population. The epidemiological situation of cancer is described using data on cancer incidence, prevalence, survival and mortality. This chapter aims to provide data that can answer questions such as: “Is the incidence of cancer higher in an elderly population?”; “What are the most common types of cancer in an elderly population?”; “What are the major tumour-related differences by age?”; and “Is there a difference in the cancer burden between (older) men and women?".
- Chapter 4 contains two ‘Capita Selecta’, or special subjects. Capita Selecta 1 aims to clarify descriptive figures on frailty and HPV status of patients with oropharyngeal cancer in relation to age. Capita Selecta 2 aims to describe the clinical management of older patients with colon and rectal cancer compared to younger patients.
- Finally, the appendix summarises data on cancer burden in Belgium (2016) for all age groups.
