Introduction
If human body material is taken from a patient in a hospital as part of a diagnose or a treatment, residual material can be preserved in the biobank of the respective hospital. The purpose of the biobank is to make the qualitative biological samples and associated data available for scientific purposes. However, the number of samples in a single biobank is often limited, especially for less common types such as rare tumours. Therefore, to promote translational research, data on residual tumour samples are uniformly collected in a central database and shared for cancer research. The samples are made available in the individual biobanks.

Objective
The Belgian Virtual Tumourbank (BVT) was set up as part of the national cancer plan launched by Minister Laurette Onkelinx in 2008. This virtual tumour bank records data on residual biological tumour samples located in individual biobanks. The BVT network currently consists of 11 biobanks associated with Belgian (university) hospitals.
The end result of registering the data is the BVT catalogue. This catalogue enables oncology researchers to locate residual biological tumour samples in the individual biobanks based on specific search criteria. This increased accessibility promotes the identification of new diagnostic and prognostic (bio)markers and the development of new cancer therapies.

Financial support and partners
This registration project is part of Belgium’s national cancer plan and is being run with financial support from the Federal Public Service for Health, Food Chain Safety and Environment.
