This publication describes, for the first time, the epidemiology of primary brain and CNS tumors in adults in Belgium over a period of 16 years (2004-2020).
Annually, approximately 2,460 adults are diagnosed, with benign tumors being the most common (56%). Men are more often affected by malignant CNS tumors than women. Gliomas are the most common malignant tumors (86%).
The 5-year survival rate varies: 97% for benign, 88% for borderline, and 22% for malignant tumors. Improvements in survival have been observed, possibly due to better treatments such as adding chemotherapy to radiotherapy.
Patients who survive the first three years have an almost 71% chance of surviving five years later. These findings offer hope, even for patients with poorer prognoses.
