Quality indicators for cancer care in Flanders (VIKZ)

Status
Ongoing

In collaboration with the Flemish Institute for Quality Care (VIKZ), the Belgian Cancer Registry (BCR) evaluates and monitors the quality of care and outcomes for patients with different types of cancer. The most recent studies have focused on breast cancer (incidence years 2009-2018), lung cancer (incidence years 2012-2019) and rectal cancer (incidence years 2010-2021).

The project aims to assess the quality of care for these patients in Flemish hospitals and to monitor potential changes over time using various process indicators, both at diagnostic and treatment level. In addition, several outcome indicators are calculated to represent and monitor the distribution of care, not only at Flemish level, but also at hospital level.

The quality indicators were selected and developed in collaboration with VIKZ and a group of clinical experts based on (inter)national publications and clinical expertise. The BCR uses cancer registration data and data on reimbursed medical services and drugs obtained from the Intermutualistic Agency (IMA-AIM) for its calculations.

The results of these studies are published on the website zorgkwaliteit.be. In addition, each Flemish hospital receives an individual BCR report to encourage self-reflection and improvements in care.
