The publication ‘Cancer in Adolescents and Young Adults, Belgium 2004-2022’ describes the epidemiology of cancer in adolescents and young adults (AYAs) in Belgium, a group of people between the ages of 16 and 35, over a period of 19 years.
Nearly 1800 AYAs are diagnosed with cancer each year, which amounts to an average of five new diagnoses per day.
AYAs have a relatively good prognosis, with a 5-year survival rate of 88% for men and 91% for women. Even for the 15-year period after diagnosis, the survival results remain promising: a survival rate of 82% for men and 85% for women, if all other causes of death are excluded.
